Comics!

I've ended up reading a lot of comics this week - half my pull list seemed to arrive in one go, plus I had time to catch up with some random purchases while I spent hours traveling. So ... I thought I'd try putting some thoughts together on them, and not just because I keep putting off the more serious adulting stuff I need to do.

Comics! )

ETA: I know I use "interesting" a lot, and should probably try and remember some synonyms for it, but honestly? I look for two things in my comics - interesting, effectively told stories, and strong characters. I can forgive weaker characterisation if the ideas are... interesting.

My VidUKon 2017 Premieré. What if Star Wars: The Force Awakens was really all about Imperator Furiosa?

I'm generally terrible at keeping up with things these days - I swim three times a week, which basically wipes out most of 3 evenings a week, and that's meant that as I decided (somewhat madly) to run an Akham Horror Play-by-Forum game, I just about keep up with twitter in a kind-of fashion, and not much else. I'm already starting to pressure myself to do things like try and produce a vid for VidUKon, because I'm daft that way.

I do want to try and be a little more active here though, as I'm conscious that I have an account I'm basically not using (and the same for LJ), and I ought to do something with it.

One of the things I have kept up with is a tracker of new things I've read over the last year, because Goodreads is rather addictive, and one of the things I was determined to do this year was spend more time reading on the train, and less time sleeping. My year in books works out to rather more by way of pagecount than I'd expected, as well as a sign that I read more comics than I'd anticipated. It's also helped me avoid buying duplicate issues, which has been useful. So, I thought I might try and post up my thoughts on things I've read, maybe once a week or once a fortnight. I won't even pretend to be in any way a sensible, practised critic - so it'll basically just be what I liked or didn't like - but I thought I'd ask if there's anything I've read in the last year that anyone would be interested in reading. This is my reading list for 2016:

https://www.goodreads.com/user/year_in_books/2016/48478680

I joined Goodreads in 2015, and there's a similar, shorter list for that year (it's shorter largely because I joined in the last quarter or so of 2015), so if anyone's interested in anything from that year, I could see what I rememebr:

https://www.goodreads.com/user/year_in_books/2015/48478680

Anyway, if you're interested, let me know.

There are quite a lot of reasons that I should be at least a bit sorry to see 2016 go; after all, the year had more than its fair share of crappy things going on, but I did get to go to a great con, I lost between 6 and 7 stone in weight (less whatever I've put back on the last week or two), I still have a job, and there are still people who talk with me periodically, despite me being scattered, unreliable, and frequently out at the swimming pool.

A lot of people have been kind to me this year, and that's definitely something I'm grateful for. The less free time I have, the more I appreciate people being will to share some of theirs with me, whether it's as company or in other ways - through book and comic recs, for example. I don't know how much I'll be capable of in 2017, but I'm going to keep trying. I managed to do a few things this last year that I don't think I could've done the year before, and I need to keep pushing forward with that.

There are also four other reasons for me to be grateful, ranging from small to tiny; I have three nieces by family, aged 16 months, 4 months and 3 weeks, as well as one niece by friendship, who's about 4-5 weeks old, and all of them are absolutely gorgeous. I'm stupidly happy about getting to be an uncle so many times over - especially as I get to be the geeky uncle who keeps sending books and toys while all the other adults are generally being much more mainstream. I'm also pretty sure I'll be a disaster in a lot of ways, but hopefully none of my four nieces will ever doubt that I adore them.

2017 doubtless has its fair share of shuddering, unspeakable disasters in the offing, but the world doesn't get to end, nor do the arseholes get to drown us in hateful acts and deeds, because my nieces have to grow up in this world, and I want them to be capable of living free, loving who they want to, and to know that things will get better. So, I've got some work to do in 2017...

Happy New Year, everyone. You rock.

And yes, there will almost certainly be jelly beans at VidUKon 2017.

With VidUKon over for the year - or at least, for the next couple of months - I thought I should try catching up with things I kept thinking I should do and never actually got around to. Ok, that's not uncommon for me, I accept :P

I was very lucky at VidUKon - I got showered with gifts by the lovely [personal profile] goodbyebird, and not just any gifts, but chocolate and Walking Dead stuff!

Pictures! )

The boxes are random TWD minifigs packs, and by blind chance - or with fearsome precognitive abilities - [personal profile] goodbyebird snagged me not just Herschel and Daryl, but also Daryl's bike. As you can imagine, I was chuffed to bits, although being a grown adult, I saved pushing Daryl around on his motorcyle on the table until I got home, because I need a certain amount of space before I start making brmmm-brmmm noises ;)

I'm VJing a vidshow at VidUKon 2016 dedicated to Fairy Tales. If you have any recs for vids based on fairy tale sources, I'd love to hear about them! There's a little over a week left for me to finish organizing the show, and while I've somehow got to fit everything into 45 minutes, the more agonizing the choices over what to show and what to drop, the better... So please, give me your recs!
brokenmnemonic: (Черно Альфа)
For this year's VidUKon, [profile] m_a_r_i_k_s suggested to me that we try putting together a show dealing with abusive relationships, and the effects of abusive behaviour on those involved and those around them, with the relationships including not just those between onscreen characters, but also relationships such as that between show writers and their characters, show writers and their audience, and so on. It turned out to be a complicated show to put together in a surprising number of ways; thinning down the list of videos to include took hours, and that was after days and days spent hunting out vids we thought might work and pitching them to each other. the final downselection was particularly brutal, with several vids that one or both of us really wanted to include, but just not enough running time.

I debated listing some of the videos that didn't quite make it into the show, but decided that it wouldn't really be fair. I was a little surprised by how well the conversations with the various vidders went when it came to requesting permission to include their vids - I envisioned the conversations getting quite difficult when it came to explaining what the show was about and how it related to the various vids, but in every case where the topic came up, the response was along the lines of saying how interesting the show sounded. That was great in some ways - I'm never quite sure when pitching show ideas how well they might go down, particularly on subjects that would naturally lend themselves to being rather difficult. I'm very grateful to every vidder who agreed to have their vid shown - I think it worked well as a show, although I remember the various vids getting applause, and then silence at the end of the show itself. I'm not sure I've ever seen a show get silence as a response.

Empire

I've been recording Empire as it airs on E4 here, and over the last few days I've watched my way through the nine or ten episodes I had recorded. It's a great show, but I have a question that's bugging me that I'm hoping someone who knows more about the US can answer...

This was my premiere at this year's VidUKon, and I was something of a neurotic mess about making and submitting it, but Becka and GBB were very persistent in ensuring I didn't back down, and much to my surprise, I didn't burst into flame when it aired...

So, I'm fretting over the Vidder's Choice at VidUKon again. I'm VJing the show, so I should actually submit a vid for it. Unfortunately, I find it almost impossible to be objective about my own vids - each one I look at, I come up with reasons why I shouldn't include it, beginning with a lack of technical aptitude, inability to recognise a beat even if it's holding a sign, and poor clip choices, and then ranging through the spectrum to "ending doesn't work", "I doubt there will be any fans of that ship there", "I've already shown enough action vids" and so on.

Wrestling everyone else's vids into something resembling a playlist or two is much easier than submitting one of my own :P
brokenmnemonic: (Черно Альфа)
The official post with instructions on how to submit shows for VidUKon is up. I kind of want all of the show suggestions posted in the discussion thread to make it into the schedule, but then I want to see ALL THE VIDS.

I've been helping [profile] m_a_r_i_k_s put together her show on Abusive Relationships, which I'm hoping has a good chance of being accepted, and unless there are any offers from better VJs, I'm hoping I'll get to herd the various cats that make up the Vidder's Choice show.

That does make me wonder if it'd be bad form for me to offer to help with or collaborate on any other shows, though. I'm really keen for someone to submit a show on Video Game Vids (and I know [personal profile] beccatoria can hear me chanting "Code To Soul!" from thirty miles away), plus I think a show on Humans and Pets (or Humans and Animals with a strong bias towards pets and Appa) would be fun, but if I'm already assisting with two shows, at what point do I become the annoying demanding person who wants to be involved in everything?

I hope that everyone has a great holiday season, and a marvellous 2014 to follow.

And friendly cats, because everyone should have the chance to bond with a friendly cat. (Treats help. Cats have no grey area where bribery is concerned.)

Farscape vids! Farscape's a show that I missed almost completely when it was airing over here, and never managed to coherently watch when it was repeated. I had the chance to sit down and watch the show through with [profile] m_a_r_i_k_s which naturally led to lots and lots of vids. When I spotted that [personal profile] frayadjacent had just watched/rewatched Farscape and mentioned vids, so naturally I got nosey :P I have more Farscape vids tucked away on my computer than anything else other than BSG, so I thought I'd dig up a few of my favourites that met Fray's preference: supporting characters, especially Aeryn, Chiana, D'Argo, Pilot and/or Zhaan, and vids that focus on the wacky zaniness of the show.

Going through the vids I had saved reminded me that there are lots of vids I still haven't watched that I really should. Maybe over Christmas...

Farscape Twist, by Sammy - This always, always makes me laugh - watch it, and find yourself doing the twist...

Theories, by Brent Barrett - how could Farscape crossed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer not be great?

Flight of the DRDs, by Bruce Mikales - as the beings that arguably gave Moya more support than anyone else, don't the DRDs deserve their own video?

Scorpy Went Down To Georgia, by Dallascaper - I know that John and Scorpy weren't on the preferred list, but for me this song will always, always be associated with the muppets, and it does a great job of showing just how much the interaction between the two of them involved somebody tripping. Seriously tripping.

My Confessions, by Nebari Rebel - this vid is all about Chiana and John, and not in a romantic or a shippy way - it's all about the confessions of two exiled survivors who just keep surviving.

Moving Right Along, by SDWolfpup - I adore this John/Dargo friendship vid, and not just because it's the Muppets contributing the soundtrack.

Far Far Away, by Sammy - I find this to be a generally hilarious John/Dargo slash vid. It's entirely possible that I'm misreading it, and if it wasn't deliberately intended to be played for laughs, then I should apologise to the vidder - but it makes so much wonderful use of exaggerated gesutres and expressions and moments.

All Star, by Diarmi - I know that this is a Crichton-centric vid, but I love how it plays with the song to highlight the comical insanity that goes hand in hand with the tragic insanity that is Crichton's life on Moya...

Cherry Lips, by Roksx - possibly my favourite Chiana vid. I always thought she was a great character and a lot of the Farscape vids I've got are ... well, tend towards the angsty or shippy. This one isn't angsty or shippy - it's about how Chiana is marvellous.

Inbelievable, by LT Garrix - I mentioned that Chiana's a great character, yes? This is another vid about how Chiana is marvellous. Spot the theme...

Hallelujah, by LithiumDoll" - I haven't seen many vids that focus on either Crais or Talyn, and while this vid is much more sombre than those that normally end up on my lists of favourites, I found Crais an interesting enough protagonist as the show went on that I'm really glad this vid exists.

Wear Sunscreen, by LithiumDoll & Doc Wyrm - I've never seen a vid quite like this before. It's not really the sort of rec asked for, but it's one of those vids that I try and gently persuade every Farscape fan to watch at one time or another...

Somewhere I Belong, by EMPorter - I'm a little biased because I really like this song, even though I've now seen it vidded to everything out there, which makes me afraid to try and vid it myself. Firefly had some great characters, and I really like the way this vid focuses on three of the women aboard ship - Aeryn, Chiana and Zhaan - and things they've done or will do.

Judith, by Dangerous Mind Productions - this vid is one where I'm not sure I like how it's been vidded, although it's a really weird song in many ways. (I prefer the faster version of the song, personally). I think it's the only vid I've seen that really focused on the darker side of Zhaan's character, though - I really liked the background her character had, and the internal struggles she went through as she attempted to live to a different, higher set of ideals than that which she could easily lapse into.

Dirty Deeds, by LT Garrix - another vid where I'm not sure I really like the execution, but I adore the idea. And you have to ask yourself - how many Braca vids are there ever going to be?

The Weird Dargo Yankovic Show, by LithiumDoll (You need to download the zip file farscape_weirddargo.zip) - definitely one of the zanier Farscape vids I've ever seen, this view of Dargo and his life is hilarious but also faintly disturbing...

Weapon of Choice, by Sammy - I've loved this video since the first time I saw it. I found it via a vid rec I think, and it's such a superb piece of comic vidding; if you're anything like me, you'll probably end up giggling maniacally as Dargo demonstrates one of those things he loves...

Sadly, it looks as if Dragon Age: Inquisition won't run on my PC, so it'll be at least a couple of years before I get to play it. Unless my PC explodes again - and I could really do without that, given all the electrical goods failures and house repairs I had to pay for this year.

I was hoping it might run, but apparently my PC has a dual core processor rather than the needed quad core, and having found people with the same spec and model as me getting mocked on the internet for being too stupid to know they didn't meet the minimum game requirements, I'm not going to chance it.

Maybe I should finish off my third ME3 playthrough and then try playing Dragon Age 2?

Or I could try and vid some more...

I'm registered on Livejournal as brokenmnemonic, and that'll probably stay my main journal, particularly for posting vids, fic or any other fanworks I actually manage to get done. Mostly I'm here because goodbyebird insists that everyone's lovely and I should sign up.

I'm on twitter as @BrokenMnemonic where I normally either mutter about vidding, get excited about helping to run VidUKon or natter about films/tv/comic/cats. Especially cats.

Based on how infrequently I post on Livejournal and how long it takes me to do almost everything, I should be up and running on dreamwidth in roughly forever plus one day. It'd help if I wasn't very lazy. I always have chocolate available though, and I usually have something to drink somewhere, and I'm happy to share.
