brokenmnemonic: (BSG Let Me Go)

I've been debating posting vid recs as part of Fannish Fifty, but I don't watch all that many, and I'm not sure I count as much of a vidder these days. However, after doing some digging around online, I thought I'd share some of the NuBSG vids that had a big impact on me when I was making my first attempts at vidding. I have a lot of feelings still about this show, and it turns out I also still have a lot of feelings about these vids, although sadly a number of those I wanted to rec seem to have vanished online.

A couple of the embeds below are from Vidders.net, and for some reason they generate a lot of white space after them when I preview the page - I don't know why, but I'm going to consider it some kind of internet mystery that would make me quake in fear if I understood it.

I suspect for anyone who was around during the BSG years most if not all of my recs will be pretty obvious, but I thought it was worth starting with what I'm guessing are probably two of the most famous ones; Rock Star Poser and Square One, both of which are by Hollywoodgrrl. I've lost track of how many times I've watched both of them. Rock Star Poser is amazingly edited, and even when I watch it now some 17-odd years since it came out, I look at the timing and the editing and the clip choices and I'm as captivated and impressed as I was the very first time I saw it:

Square One is just as well edited, but I love this character study for the way it channels emotions and mood:

Middleman - bop-radar and I were baby vidders together, and Boppy was one of the best friends I ever made in the BSG fandom. Boppy's made a lot of really good vids, but of her BSG vids this Lee Adama character study is my favourite. I love the choice of song and how the vid dives into his character in a way that feels very true to character to me.

Lord's Prayer - It's probably not a surprise to anyone who knows me that I'm going to rec a couple of mariks07's vids. It was Boppy who introduced me to Mariks' vids, and Mariks' then spent the next decade or so making vids that blew my mind. Having watched every vid Mariks has made, each one attempts something new in the techniques it uses, and each BSG vid found new ways to explore characters, even bringing in footage from external sources to help show or explore ideas. This first vid, Lord's Prayer, explores the Cylon point of view and their faith/relationship with their god:

Accidental Babies - As a Kara/Lee shipper I watched a lot of shipper vids and I have a small host of favourites, but this one was made after the show had finished, and I both love it and fear it in equal measure; I don't watch it too often because of the way it grabs at me and drags up feelings. I barely make a single vid a year these days, because my BSG vidding was driven by emotion, and I've not really found anything that's moved me quite the same way. This vid always reminds me exactly how it felt at the time:

Devils and Dust - The last vid is by [personal profile] beccatoria, and I can't find a streaming version of it but there's a downloadable version on dreamwidth here: https://beccatoria.dreamwidth.org/2006/05/04/ - I'm not sure I've ever seen another BSG vid that used a Bruce Springstten song, and I really enjoy the way that this vid uses the song to explore the messy mix formed by humans, cylons, and religion - and the way the choices made and the actions undertaken by the humans and cylons produce spiralling consequences. There are a few moments in this that were real "oooof" moments for me, and I like the way the vid builds up with each refrain.
